Snake River Correctional Institution Release Paths
A person leaving Snake River Correctional Institution may enter the community under parole or post-prison supervision, complete the sentence and discharge, transfer to another Oregon DOC institution, or move into another authority's custody. Each outcome has a different record trail. A state prison departure is not a Malheur County Correctional Facility release, even though both facilities are in Malheur County. County jail bail rules, release-deputy procedures, and county booking records do not govern SRCI.
Release to supervision ends physical prison custody but not legal control. Local Community Corrections may then appear in Oregon Offender Search as the location or caseload. Full discharge means the prison term and supervision have ended, though historical DOC and court records may remain. Transfer leaves custody intact at a new institution or agency. Always identify the destination and current legal status before calling any departure an unrestricted return to the community.
State release terms
Post-prison supervision is community oversight after prison. Discharge ends the applicable custody or supervision term. Transfer continues custody elsewhere.
Note: A departure from SRCI is not a county jail release even when the next destination is within Malheur County.
Confirm Snake River Correctional Institution Release
The correct first portal is Oregon Offender Search, commonly called OOS. It covers people currently in Oregon DOC custody or under a local Community Corrections office. That scope is useful after prison release when supervision remains active, but it is not a permanent history. A fully discharged person may no longer appear. A missing record therefore cannot prove discharge.
- Search by SID. Use the state identification number when known. Otherwise enter the full name or use the permitted wildcard for a partial name.
- Open the linked SID. Match the person with identifiers instead of relying on a name alone.
- Read the record together. Compare Status, Location, Caseload, Institution Admission Date, and Earliest Release Date.
- Check the authority. An institution location points toward prison custody. A Community Corrections location may show physical release with supervision.
- Confirm the event. Use a saved VISOR alert, the judgment, any Board order that applies, and a DOC records response for the actual release or discharge history.
OOS information is periodically updated and is not the official record. Those pages address the sheriff-operated Vale jail and cannot establish a state prison discharge.
An OOS Earliest Release Date is prospective and must not be reported as the date a person actually left Snake River.

The public record may also display a photo, name, age, public month and year of birth, physical descriptors, offenses, sentence type, begin and termination dates, and aliases. Use only enough data to match the correct person. Save the lookup time because a transfer, release, supervision change, or data update can alter the record.

The DOC Public Records page opens the official request route. Ask for the custody-status history, actual release or discharge date, release authority or type, receiving or supervising authority, and relevant time-credit or sentence-computation record. Fees, exemptions, and redactions are governed by Oregon law. DOC supplies records it has and need not calculate a new date in response to a question.
Snake River Correctional Institution Release Dates
Earliest Release Date is the exact label used by OOS. It is not an actual departure timestamp and should not be renamed as though DOC promised a final date. The displayed value can depend on the judgment, sentence structure, statutory credits, program eligibility, misconduct, consecutive cases, detainers, and later orders. Oregon's DOC earned-time rule can allow up to a 20 percent reduction for eligible people under ORS 421.121, but exclusions and the governing sentence must be checked. Oregon does not have a single general rule that every state prisoner serves the same percentage.
An actual release is established after the event. A DOC custody-history response can state when custody ended or changed. Snake River Release Notifications
Oregon now uses VISOR, the Victim Information System in Oregon, rather than the familiar consumer VINELink path. VISOR covers Oregon DOC, county jails, Community Corrections, the Oregon Youth Authority, and the Board of Parole and Post-Prison Supervision. Search is expressly limited to people currently in custody or under supervision. The portal can also display offline-jail notices, though that county-jail issue does not change DOC's role at SRCI.
Search with a SID or county ID when possible, or use a full or partial name and compare identifiers. A detail may show Status, Custody Status Date, identifiers, Earliest Release Date, and facility information. Registration can send phone, text, email, or TTY notifications for chosen events. A release alert is useful evidence that the authority reported a change. It does not establish whether Community Corrections, another institution, or another legal authority immediately took responsibility.
After physical release, Malheur County Community Corrections may supervise a person living locally. Its service office is at 1682 SW Fourth Street in Ontario, with public service at 541-881-2400. OOS can remain useful during this stage because its scope includes current Community Corrections cases. The Oregon Board sets conditions and makes decisions only in categories within its jurisdiction; local offices handle day-to-day supervision.
Snake River Institution Facts
Oregon DOC describes Snake River Correctional Institution as a multi-custody state prison and the state's largest prison. It opened in August 1991. The cited DOC issue brief reports just over 3,000 beds. These figures describe the institution, not the current status of any named person.
The official SRCI issue brief supports the opening, custody type, and scale. Capacity cannot confirm presence. Use OOS for current custody or supervision, and use a DOC records request for historical release proof. A person who once served time at SRCI may now be supervised in another county or fully discharged from the OOS scope.
Snake River Release Jurisdictions
Geography causes a common error in Malheur County. SRCI, Community Corrections, and the sheriff jail are all local in place, but they belong to different custody functions. The Vale jail, whose current records contact is Sheriff Travis Johnson, handles county booking and short-term custody. SRCI houses state prisoners. Community Corrections manages local supervision after release. The Malheur Circuit Court may supply the sentence or later order, while BOPPPS addresses only the parole matters within its legal reach.
Federal and immigration systems are separate again. No federal prison or official ICE detention facility was identified in Malheur County. A state prisoner can still face a federal or immigration hold, but such a transfer must be confirmed through the receiving authority. The BOP locator applies only if the person entered federal BOP custody. ICE's locator covers current custody and a short recent-release period. Neither converts an SRCI projected date into proof of freedom from every authority.
